BACKGROUND
Ishkode was born human on a First Nations reservation in the northern parts of Canada. He was cared for by his Gookomis and Miishomis (Grandmother and Grandfather) for his very young years. He was happy and loved and while his little family wasn't rich, he never wanted for anything. Unfortunately, his grandparents weren't actually his biological nor legal guardians. At the age of six he was taken from them by child services when his father signed his rights away. Ishkode was hurt and angry, not understanding why he couldn't stay with his grandparents. He fought his first foster family so furiously and violently that he was moved to a group home facility for troubled children.
One night, Ishkode was awoken from a strange dream to find the voice from it was still speaking to him. It spoke of helping him gain the power he wanted so he could be free of the bad things that were happening to him. All he had to do was find them and they would help. He snuck out to follow the voice and wound up in a strange grove of twisted trees. In the center was a cairn of stones with light coming from inside it. The voice told him to take it apart and he would get his power. As soon as Ishkode pulled enough of the stones free he was blinded by a brilliant light. Everything exploded into pain as his body started to change and transform.
When he staggered back to the group home everyone panicked as he was no longer human. He'd been changed into a 'monster' and the staff called the authorities to come deal with him. He was immediately moved from the group home to a boarding facility made specifically for these mutated children. Being little more than a place to keep these 'dangerous' kids corralled and out of the public eye, Ishkode was left with no real help to cope with the change he'd undergone and a whole new set of prejudices to face.
Over his years in the 'boarding school', Ishkode learned about what had happened to him and that he had been given the form of a flatback sea turtle. Many of the other kids were the same, though the animal forms they were given were different. A voice calling them somewhere and getting them to do something that changed them. Some of them still heard the voices in their dreams. Some had strange mystical powers, even, though the ones who did often disappeared rather suddenly and no one would tell them where they went. Ishkode had none of those and so continued to live there, fighting everyone and becoming a horrible bully.
He grew up bitter and angry about what had happened to him leading him to a very troubled childhood and teen years full of violence and bare escapes from prison. He finally ran away from the facility at the age of seventeen. Not long afterwards he was part of an altercation that caused an explosion in a warehouse that killed several human workers. Ishkode escaped only to be caught by a group of hunters, later, and he thought for sure he would wind up locked away permanently for it, if not executed, despite it being an accident.
The hunters who caught him, however, weren't police. They were men working for a crime boss known as 'The Captain'. Maverick had found out about the whole thing and was cashing in on the bounties put out for the perpetrators. Also being a sea turtle mutant, Maverick kept Ishkode aside and offered the young man a choice. He could join up with him and work for him or Maverick would turn him and all the evidence of how he was responsible over to the actual authorities. Ishkode agreed, though begrudgingly, and found his life being controlled by the man.
However, life under Maverick's rule was better than the one he'd had before. Ishkode learned that it was much easier to get what he wanted, not only from Maverick but from anyone else, by flaunting the fact that he was striking and eye catching and very appealing. He became a dancer and a stripper which Maverick encouraged in him as it gave Ishkode the opportunity to collect a lot of information for him. He became The Captain's secret weapon. An addict sex worker on the surface but, after learning muay thai and boxing from Maverick, also a ruthless and efficient killer.
Ishkode is still determined to change the world for people like him. Both for his Indigenous heritage and for his fellow mutants. One day, when he can finally take over from The Captain, he knows he'll finally have the power to start doing so.
Even if that means tearing down the very fabric of society and rebuilding it from scratch.
